Biography
The rise of The Coppertones is a true success story; from obscurity to having their second single on one of the most respected beach music charts in the industry (beachmusic45.coms Smokin 45), and ending the year with a performance at the Carolina Beach Music Awards Industry Show.
2007 began with the release of Real Man on Ripete Records
I Could Dance All Night Vol. II, and their single Party Down the Street on the charts of the flagship station of Carolina Beach music, 94.9 The Surf. 2007 ended with the release of I Grew Up on the Beach and Eat Mo Grits fixtures on beach music charts around the Southeast. Word-of-mouth recognition is spreading like wildfire.
The reason for the recognition is very simple; a quality product, a dedication to accuracy, and the philosophy that they are hired-help, and not stars. Its not about them; its about entertaining you.
The Coppertones have worked with and/or opened for some of the biggest names in beach music; The Tams, The Drifters, Billy Scott and the Prophets, Coastline Band, Craig Woolard Band, and Maurice Williams, just to name a few.
The Coppertones are:
Memphis Rich Fowler Piano Harmonica and Vocals
Memphis TN
Memphis Rich Fowler began working professionally with an 8 piece horn band in Memphis at the age of 16. For 3 years that band Globe was one of the top bands in Memphis with at least 8 appearances on the George Klein show where they shared the stage with names such as Tommy James of the Shondells, The Babys and Al Green. Globe recorded several recordings at the Hi Recording Studio (The same studio that Al Green cut his famous first album). Globe also opened for Dr. John and Brownsville Station.
At age 19 Memphis Rich went on the road and worked with various bands on the Ramada Inn and Holiday Inn Circuits. In 1986 Rich moved to Charleston, S.C.
and has performed solo and with several local bands such as Michael Viljacs Elvis Tribute Band. Memphis joined The Coppertones in the summer of 2005 but can still be seen sometimes performing solo around Charleston.
Judy The Gidget Marshall Featured Vocalist
Nashville TN
Judy has been performing professionally since the age of 15 (which she claims was seven years ago). She has an extensive background in theatre, lead vocals, and background vocals. She has provided background vocals in recording studios in Tennessee, Virginia, and South Carolina. Additionally, her vocal style ranges from pop, classic R&B, country/bluegrass, and show tunes. Judy has performed in numerous theatrical productions, including lead roles in Anything Goes,Little Shop of Horrors, and Steel Magnolias.
As a recording artist in Nashville, she worked with The Jordanaires, The Lea Jane Singers, and The Nashville Edition. She also provided demo vocals for various songwriters including Kim Williams, songwriter for Garth Brooks, Joe Diffy and Reba McIntyre. However, Judys proudest moment was performing as background vocalist for Percy Sledge.
Jim Kavorka Hensley Guitar
N Augusta SC
Jim grew up in N Augusta, SC, cutting his teeth on James Brown. At sixteen he bought a guitar and started playing R & B. At seventeen he joined the U.S. Navy and on the week-ends played in a Variety Band and later, in a Country Band.
Back in civilian life, he has played in every kind of band imaginable. Rock,
Country, and even in a alternative band. After being lucky enough to
see Jackie Wilson perform, he returned to his roots; R&B and soul music. His biggest influence is Steve Cropper.
Jim has been living on James Island for twelve years and can not imagine
living anywhere else. It is just him and his black Stratocaster.
Fabulous Lou Salvino Percussion
Kingston NY
Fabulous Lou's career as a drummer has spanned over thirty years. Lou has played a wide variety of music including jazz, rock, blues, and R&B. He has performed in musical productions as well including HAIR and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Over the years he has shared the stage with numerous recording artists such as Robbie Dupree (Heart Rod Hearts, Steal Away), Larry Hoppen (Orleans) and Fred Wesley (James Brown).
Lou and his wife Valerie have resided in the lowcountry for the past ten years where he has been performing with local favorites including Joe Clarke and Mike Viljacs Elvis Presley Tribute Show band.
J R Rainman Ryan Bass and Vocals
Bellville NJ
A veteran of the Jersey shore bar scene, an area that produced BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY. JR brings a solid bottom to the mix, working in sync with Lou to deliver a tight groove. He also adds the tenor to the Tones tight harmonies, and serves as musical director. JR is also a walking encyclopedia of useless musical trivia (hence the Rainman reference).
Larry Sugarbritches Williams Organ, Synth and Vocals
Charlotte NC
Seems The Britches has been performing all his life. He first started on drums in a Monkees tribute band (way ahead of the tribute band curve) when he was 12. He played in various bands, always with a horn section, all throughout school.
In college Larry worked with the legendary frat band ARG, and was recognized as one of the premier musicians in the Charlotte area.
He also worked as a member of Major Lances backup band.
The Britches was away from the music scene for about 15 years, concentrating on home recording and writing. He then joined the Charleston band, Blue Eyed Soul and began working keys into his performance.
The Britches and Rainman met, and with The Gidget, ultimately formed The Coppertones. His experience with horns has helped him think like a horn player to add bite to The Tones show.
A natural ham, he fronts the show.
The Coppertones believe that music should be live with no pre-recorded tracks, studio tricks or digital sterility; that four-part harmony should be the star of the show; that entertainers should be flexible and meet the needs of their client; that equipment should be sized to suit the venue; and that being on-time and easy to work with is not an attribute…it is what is required of professionals.
Professional entertainers (not wanna-be rock stars) bringing classic R&B, Soul, Motown and Carolina Beach to their audiences; focusing on their needs and entertaining their guests at an affordable price, without offensive volume levels; harmony should be paramount, and music should be LIVE!
The Coppertones ; preventing good people from hiring bad bands.
We believe you will come to the opinion that is growing all over the Southeast, that The Coppertones are The South’s Premier LIVE Party Band, and stand ready to satisfy all your entertainment needs.
